I love the end of the year. As an avid vision board enthusiast, December is my time to get a detailed vision of the next year—and a chance to let my artistic side shine, even if it’s just on display in my bedroom.
One question I always ask myself during this process is: What am I adding, and what am I subtracting?
As a creative and high achiever, adding is easy. I have endless ideas sitting on the proverbial shelf, just waiting for their turn to come to life. But subtraction? That’s the hard part.
What is no longer serving me? What has run its course?
Sometimes the answers are obvious. They glare at you or force themselves into your life because you didn’t subtract them voluntarily. But other times—most times—intentionally deciding what will not carry forward with you requires deep reflection and vision.
The truth is, you simply can’t carry everything from the past into the new year and expect to grow.
To level up, you have to let go. Here’s why.
Too many of us step into a new year—or a new phase of life—with clutter: physical, emotional, and mental. We hold onto things that weigh us down:
Habits that drain us.
Commitments that no longer align with our values.
Relationships that keep us stuck.
Beliefs that limit what we think is possible.
Like hoarders who cling to items they “might need one day,” we carry these burdens out of fear, attachment, or habit.
But here’s the irony:
You can’t fully enjoy what you already have, and you can’t create space for what you truly want.
This clutter creates anxiety, overwhelm, and dissatisfaction. Instead of stepping into the life you desire, you stay tethered to what no longer serves you.
Letting go isn’t about giving up—it’s about creating space for what truly matters. It can take many forms:
Physical Clutter: Clear out spaces that overwhelm you. A clean environment fosters energy and focus.
Toxic Relationships: Distance yourself from people who drain your spirit and progress.
Outdated Beliefs: Challenge thoughts like “I have to do it all” or “I can’t take risks.” Let go of limiting mindsets.
Unaligned Commitments: Say no to obligations that don’t serve your goals, time, or energy.
Letting go isn’t about loss—it’s about choice. It’s about choosing what aligns with your values, goals, and vision for the future.
What will you let go of as you step into your next level?
